How Stress Hormones Drive Abdominal Fat
Cortisol — your primary stress hormone — has a direct relationship with belly fat. When cortisol levels remain elevated (chronic stress, poor sleep, menopause), your body preferentially stores fat in the abdominal region. This happens because visceral fat cells have four times more cortisol receptors than subcutaneous fat cells elsewhere in the body.
During menopause, cortisol levels tend to rise naturally. Hot flashes disrupt sleep. Sleep disruption raises cortisol. Elevated cortisol increases belly fat. Belly fat produces inflammatory cytokines that worsen menopause symptoms. Breaking this cycle is essential for managing menopausal weight changes.
