Which tea actually settles it
For a stomach that feels tight and distended, the herbal carminatives sit on firmer mechanical ground than green tea does. Fennel and peppermint have been measured acting directly on stomach muscle. Green tea's evidence runs through a different route.
Picture the decision it answers. You are in the kitchen at 9pm with a waistband that has been arguing with you since lunch, holding two boxes. Green tea, because everyone says it is the healthy one. Peppermint or fennel, because your mother swore by it.
None of that means green tea does nothing. It means the two teas were studied in different ways, answering different questions, and the research quality is not matched. Specialists genuinely disagree about how much weight either deserves.
What the green tea review found
In October 2025, researchers published a systematic review in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, abstract S1109, pooling clinical evidence on green tea for irritable bowel syndrome. Several of the studies reviewed did report statistically significant improvement in abdominal pain, bloating, and satisfaction with bowel habits.
One double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial of a green tea, curcumin and selenomethionine combination improved satisfaction with bowel habits, moving mean scores from 70.4 to 61.8 with a P value of 0.037. Two studies of EGCG-enriched extract reported improvements in pain and bloating.
Read that carefully, though. The strongest result came from a combination product, not green tea alone, so the tea cannot claim the credit by itself. The authors themselves flagged heterogeneity in dosing, formulation and outcome measures, and called for large-scale standardized trials.

Where does the disagreement start?
The tension is this. Green tea's bloating evidence arrives mostly through inflammation, antioxidant activity and gut microbiota, which are slow, systemic, indirect pathways. Bloating, for most women, is an acute mechanical complaint: something is not moving, and pressure is building where it sits.
So a reviewer sympathetic to green tea points to real human trial data with real P values. A skeptical gastroenterologist points out that those trials studied IBS populations, often used concentrated extracts rather than a brewed cup, and mixed green tea with other actives.
Both readings are defensible from the same paper. That is what a genuine scientific disagreement looks like, and it is worth saying plainly rather than resolving it with a slogan. The review's own conclusion was that more evidence is needed, not that the case is closed.

What fennel does to the stomach
The herbal side has a different kind of proof, and it is mechanically specific. In November 2025, Annaházi and colleagues at the Technical University of Munich published in Neurogastroenterology and Motility the first report describing what fennel tea does to stomach muscle.
They mounted guinea pig stomach tissue in an organ bath and applied freshly brewed fennel tea across eight concentrations, from 0.78 to 100 microlitres per millilitre. The effect was not uniform. It depended entirely on which part of the stomach they tested.
In the fundus and corpus, the upper stomach, every concentration significantly relaxed the muscle, and washing the tea out reversed it. In the antrum, the lower section that pushes food onward, tone did not change but contraction amplitude rose. Relaxation above, propulsion below.
Is that proof it works in people?
No, and this is exactly where honest reading matters. That fennel study used animal tissue in a laboratory bath, not women drinking tea. The authors say so directly, noting the exact cause of the opposing regional effect still needs to be explored.

The VitaLibrary review of fennel for gas and bloating reaches the same cautious verdict, describing the evidence as promising but limited, with effects usually modest. Small trials, few participants, short durations, and inconsistent definitions of what bloating even means across studies.
Peppermint has the better trials
If you want the strongest human trial evidence in this whole category, it is not green tea and it is not fennel. A 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis in Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine pooled five randomized controlled trials covering 578 participants on a peppermint and caraway oil combination.
The pooled result for global symptom improvement was a risk ratio of 0.59, with a confidence interval of 0.49 to 0.71 and a number needed to treat of three. For a herbal preparation, that is a respectable finding, and adverse events did not differ significantly from placebo.
Then read the authors' own caveat. They graded the evidence low to very low using GRADE, citing risk of bias and serious imprecision, and every trial ran only four weeks. The honest summary is encouraging but fragile.
Matching the tea to the symptom
Match the tea to what your stomach is actually doing. If the discomfort is upper-belly tightness and fullness after eating, the carminative herbs are the ones with a measured mechanism at that location: fennel relaxing the upper stomach while nudging the lower section along.
Green tea carries genuine trial signals, but its bloating evidence is indirect and mostly came from extracts inside combination products. Expecting a brewed cup to replicate an EGCG-enriched supplement result is an extrapolation the studies do not support.
One caution the peppermint literature raises specifically. Peppermint oil lowers pressure at the lower esophageal sphincter and increases the likelihood of reflux, so if you have heartburn or GERD, that particular herb may cost you more than it gives.
When tea is the wrong question
There is a line where this whole comparison stops being useful. Bloating that never eases overnight, that is constant rather than fluctuating, or that arrives alongside pain, changes in bowel habits, or unexplained weight loss is not a tea decision. It is a reason to see your doctor promptly.
The kind of bloating this article is about is the familiar kind: worse by evening, better by morning, tied to meals. If yours behaves differently, trust that instinct over any herbal tradition, including the well-evidenced ones.
