Ashwagandha: The Evidence for Stress-Related Weight
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is one of the most extensively studied adaptogens for cortisol reduction. A systematic review of 12 randomized controlled trials found that ashwagandha supplementation significantly reduced cortisol levels compared to placebo, with some studies showing reductions of 23-30% in serum cortisol.
The connection to belly fat is indirect but logical: chronic elevated cortisol promotes visceral fat storage, particularly in the abdominal region. By moderating cortisol, ashwagandha may help interrupt the stress-belly fat cycle. One study in chronically stressed adults found that ashwagandha supplementation was associated with reduced food cravings and improved eating behaviors — both relevant to weight management.
